Lombok: Scores die as quake again hits Indonesian island
At least 91 people are now known to have died after a powerful earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Lombok.
Hundreds of people have been wounded by Sunday’s quake, officials say, mostly in the north of the island.
The 6.9 magnitude tremor was fairly shallow, occurring only 30km (18 miles) underground. It damaged thousands of buildings and triggered power cuts.
About 1,000 foreign tourists are being evacuated from the nearby Gili islands and at least one person died on Bali.

At least 91 people have been killed and more than 200 severely injured in a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Indonesian tourist islands of Lombok and Bali on Sunday evening, the secondly deadly quake to hit in a week.
A spokesperson for the country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) gave the updated toll on Monday and said all the victims were Indonesian. All of the victims were on Lombok, including 72 in North Lombok, except for two, who died in Denpasar, Bali and one who died on the Gili islands.
More than 100 aftershocks have hit the area since the quake that struck the island at 6.46pm on Sunday, and 3,000 homes have been damaged, leaving many displaced…

An Indonesian disaster agency official says efforts to find victims in the rubble of a mosque collapsed by Sunday’s earthquake in north Lombok has been hampered by the lack of heavy equipment.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said at a news conference Monday afternoon the current toll of 91 dead will “definitely increase,” citing the mosque as an example of the devastation still being accounted for.
Nguroho said the devastation has isolated hard-hit areas from rescuers and made distribution of resources difficult.
He said reports that seven Indonesian tourists were killed on Gili Trawangan island near Lombok have not been verified yet…

Rescuers still haven’t reached some devastated parts of the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok after a powerful earthquake flattened houses and toppled bridges, killing at least 91 people and shaking neighboring Bali, authorities said Monday. The death toll is expected to rise.
It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok. A July 29 quake killed 16 people and damaged hundreds of houses, some of which collapsed in Sunday evening’s magnitude 7.0 temblor, killing those inside.
