Once in generation flood has NSW town preparing to evacuate

An evacuation order has been issued for residents in the New South Wales central western town of Forbes, as they brace for rising waters from a once-in-a-generation flood to hit.  Residents have been told to leave their homes by 5pm on Saturday.  The flood is expected to be the worst to hit the town since 132 houses were damaged in 1990, as recent heavy rains have saturated large parts of inland NSW.  Condobolin in central-west NSW is also preparing to be hit…

If we don’t slow it down soon, the chances of avoiding disastrous climate change, species loss and the disruption of indigenous and traditional people’s cultures grow slimmer. And this rapid deceleration will be possible only if the governments, farm sectors, rural communities, businesses and civil societies of tropical forest regions devise and implement effective strategies.  In the long term, the goal of taming deforestation must be embedded in public policies, programmes, business transactions and culture.  To put it bluntly, political leaders who embrace the goal of taming deforestation must be electable….
