Typhoon Nepartak made landfall in Taiwan Friday morning after a week of oh-my-god drumroll, from wow Facebook FB +1.19% posts of satellite maps to severe safety warnings from the de facto U.S. embassy to American citizens. As of its third hour on land the storm had dumped rain and blasted wind that ripped signs off buildings in at least one coastal city. But so far no reports of mass deaths or collapsed infrastructure. Typhoons, the term in Asia for what Americans call hurricanes, normally reach Taiwan and other developed (read “prepared”) parts of Asia from July through November on hype that outweighs real impact. Super typhoon Nepartak hit Taiwan on Friday, driving thousands of people from their homes, disrupting power supplies and grounding more than 600 flights, authorities said.  Television showed toppled motorcycles and signboards being ripped from buildings and swept across roads in southeast Taiwan, where the year’s first typhoon made landfall…

Seeing the incredible strength of the storm is truly terrifying—you can see the powerful winds tossing cars, shaking buildings, and ripping the ground…

Super Typhoon Nepartak was so strong it tossed cars in Taiwan like toys

Super Typhoon Nepartak ripped the Taiwanese coastline last night, coming ashore as the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. The storm’s winds were estimated at 150 mph. In Taitung City, the wind was strong enough to fling cars like toys.  At least two people have been reported killed in the aftermath of the cyclone, and 66 have been injured, the BBC reports.  James Reynolds, a professional typhoon chaser and documentarian, rode out the storm in Taitung City, where its strongest winds came ashore. The video he shot shows the violent winds and driving…
