The Oil Spill in the Adriatic Sea Is a Sneak Peek at Looming Natural Disasters

An equipment malfunction at an oil refinery caused an oil spill in the Adriatic Sea off the coast in Croatia last week, wreaking havoc on the local environment and creating panic among locals. On the afternoon of May 12, in Kostrena near the coastal Croatian city of Rijeka in an area known as Urinj, parts of the Adriatic Sea and its coastline turned black after a pipeline from the local oil refinery, INA, began leaking oil, causing an ecological disaster. Locals took photos and reported the incident to the authorities, who assembled teams to try and repair the damages. New evidence that poorer countries will suffer the worst effects of climate change has shown that the number of hot days in tropical developing countries is likely to increase markedly as global warming takes hold. It has long been expected that poor people would bear the brunt of climate change, largely because so many more of the world’s poorest live in tropical latitudes whereas, wealthier people tend to live in more temperate regions…
