The Victorian winners will now become finalists in the national awards. Today is National PrepareAthon! Day. The name may be a bit much, but it emphasizes an important topic: Improving your family’s emergency preparedness and resilience to potential disasters. “Disaster risks in the Midwest can range from severely cold temperatures, to high heat, severe storms and flooding. It’s important to understand each of these risks and what you and your family will need to do to stay safe,” FEMA Region V Administrator Andrew Velasquez III said in a news release. “Be proactive, and engage your family, friends and neighbors in one of the many simple ways to prepare for emergencies.”…

 

Major Hurricane Joaquin to Hammer US East Coast With Flooding, Strong Winds

huricaneHurricane Joaquin is rapidly intensifying. Joaquin reached Category 3 status late Wednesday evening. The storm is now expected to strengthen into a Category 4 storm sometime late Thursday or Thursday night. After it passes just northeast of the Bahamas Thursday, Joaquin will begin to turn north and parallel the East Coast on Friday and Saturday. The storm will bring pounding surf, dangerous seas, strong winds, drenching squalls and flash flooding to the central Bahamas. Wind gusts could reach between 75 and 100 mph on some of the islands…
