Judith Rodin’s warning for the world: ‘Crisis is becoming the new normal’

Judith Rodin’s new book, The Resilience Dividend, begins with her surveying the destruction wrought by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. “There were the low-lying neighbourhoods of Staten Island exposed to sea rise, flooding and storm surge, where people had died in the storm. I saw damaged dunes and other soft, natural infrastructure that had been washed away, leaving neighbourhoods completely unprotected … I saw homes destroyed, neighbourhoods disrupted, people’s lives destroyed.”…

 

What Refugee Women Teach Us About Resilience

Last September I brought my film Coral the Ocean Dome to Tianjin, this year in Davos I am presenting “Evolution of Fearlessness” an immersive, interactive artwork that responds to touch. To experience the work you first read the stories of 10 women who are primarily political refugees now residing in Australia. The stories of these women verge from the horrendous to the terribly sad. Most have experienced extreme acts of violence and worse. But the work is not about what has happened to the women, it is about who they have become. After reading their stories the viewer approaches a doorway in a darkened room and places a hand on the glass portal…

 

Western lawmakers want to treat megafires like natural disasters

Western lawmakers are again mounting a push to revise the way the federal government pays to ight wildfires by treating the largest wildfires as natural disasters. On Thursday, Sens. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, introduced the Wildfire Disaster Funding Act of 2015, which would allow the government to pay the expense of fighting the largest, most destructive wildfires through the Federal Emergency Management Agency…

 

Personal Resiliency Is Paramount for Future Disasters

I had lunch earlier this week with Monica Gowan, Ph.D., and she was telling me about her research work summarized in this Mayo Clinic blog post: “A Mayo Clinic researcher says individuals need to build disaster readiness and resiliency in order to better recover from the effects of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and other natural disasters. Those who prepare well for disasters are more likely to have a sense of spiritual and emotional well-being and be satisfied with their life.”…
