Jefferson County hoping to build tornado-resistant community with grant money

The county is one of 67 applicants across the country competing for $1 billion in grant money in the National Disaster Resilience Competition. The funds for the project are left over from Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. Jefferson County is going after $55 million to help develop a new “sustainable community.” These communities include homes which are more tornado resistant, as well as including better recreational amenities and employment opportunities…

THESE are the startling maps which appear to show the countries most at risk of facing an apocalypse of cataclysmic proportions. The maps, compiled using the ND-Gain Index, a project of the University of Notre Dame in the US, reveal the places around the world facing the biggest threat from the effects of climate change. Unsurprisingly, poorer nations faired the worst with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, Eritrea, Burundi and Chad facing the biggest risk, according to the index…

OPINION: A new year is always filled with optimism, new year’s resolutions, we decide to make this year better than the last and wash away the memories of the bad parts of the year just finished with a few beverages and the company of good friends. However, in Australia, the early part of the year usually represents the time when natural disasters happen. If your business depends at all on outside suppliers, internet or anything else beyond your direct control it is well worth taking to time to consider your Business Continuity Plan. “A BCP is a collection of procedures and information that is developed, compiled and maintained in readiness for use in the event of a disruption to an organisation or its value chain”. Because it includes your value chain it considers what happens if any of the people you deal with are unavailable, eg suppliers, freight, internet, etc…

The aftermaths of typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis — arguably the holy trinity of natural disasters — have mobilized some of the biggest humanitarian efforts the international development community has ever seen. For instance, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 brought in more than $6 billion in disaster assistance, of which $1 billion went to Indonesia alone. The Haiti earthquake in 2010, meanwhile, generated $9 billion in disaster aid pledges. And to date, nearly $2 billion in disaster assistance has been pledged in response to Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines in 2013…
