State of emergency in New York state after freak snowstorm leaves eight dead

At least eight people have been killed after a freak snowstorm in New York State. Motorists were left stranded in their cars overnight as more than one and a half metres of snow fell in some places. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in ten counties. “This is an extraordinarily difficult situation. We’re bringing in hundreds of pieces of equipment from all throughout the state. We’ve asked neighbouring states for equipment to supplement what we are going to be bringing in from across the state,” he said. Cities near the Great Lakes such as Buffalo were worst affected, with many people trapped in their homes…

 

Professor creates app to protect towns from disasters

There has not been a single storm quite as strong and deadly as Hurricane Sandy since it swept across the East Coast in 2012. But in order to better protect people and towns from future natural disasters, Janne Lindqvist created a mobile application that would help prevent widespread power outages in coming years. Lindqvist, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rutgers, developed Hazard Tracker, an app part of a National Science Foundation project. The project sought to crowdsource physical-world tasks in local communities…

 

FDNY Sending Out Crews To Help With Snow Disaster In Buffalo

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — New York City fire crews will be heading to Buffalo Friday to help the snowbound city get out from under accumulations of up several feet. Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced Thursday that the FDNY Incident Management Team has been deployed to Buffalo to assist in snow removal efforts. The deployment came at the request of the New York State Division of Homeland Security. Thirty-five members of the unit were set to leave for Buffalo from the FDNY Fire Academy at 5:45 a.m…

Of the thousands of landslide-prone villages he has visited and worked with, R M S Bandara, a high-ranking official from Sri Lanka’s National Building Resources Organisation (NBRO), says only one has made him sit up and take note. Keribathgala, located in the Ratnapura District about 120 km southeast of the capital, Colombo, is the only village out of thousands that keeps a regular tab on the rain gauge donated by the Disaster Management Ministry’s NBRO, the focal point for all landslide-related services in the country…

 

An exhibition on disaster preparedness

On Nov. 8, the traveling exhibition showcasing activities centered on disaster risk reduction and post-disaster relief and recovery opened at the Ayala Museum. Titled Earth Manual Project, this exhibition is an initiative of KIITO (Design and Creative Center Kobe) that encourages a country of frequent natural disasters, such as the Philippines, to also become a country of excellent disaster preparedness. The exhibition provides an opportunity for visitors to make their own disaster preparedness manual based on the presented projects. The scheduled talks by speakers Osamu Tsukihashi of “Lost Homes” Model Restoration Project, Hirokazu Nagata of NPO Plus Arts, Ruttikorn Vuttikorn of Club Creative Co. Ltd., and Dan Matutina of Plus63 Design Co. gave visitors a chance to hear stories and expertise from overseas creators…
