The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 registered somewhere between 7.7 and 8.25 on the richter scale, and it radiated all the way down to Los Angeles and up to Oregon. To this day, the earthquake (and the devastating fires that followed) remains one of the worst natural disasters in US history, right alongside the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 and Katrina. Last year, Dan Meyerson and Matt Peterson, two filmmakers, helped recapture what life looked like in the “post-nuclear landscape” of San Francisco by editing a collection of news footage taken after the quake…

 

UN Praises Cuban Disaster Risk Management and Civil Defense Systems

UN Representative in Havana Laura Melo stressed the Cuban disaster risk management experience and the role of the island’s Civil Defense system in disaster situations. The Cuban experience can be implemented in other countries to help strengthen their strategies, said the UN official, who stressed the need to advance South-South cooperation, as she addressed participants at the 9th International Congress on Disasters, underway in Havana. The United Nations support governments and settlements to implement strategies and policies aimed at mitigating the effects of natural disaster at world level, said Melo and noted that the international organization is increasing community-oriented training courses in preparation for and management of disaster risks…

 

Hanoi Prepares To Prevent Natural Disasters

Hanoi will set up 13 working groups this month to inspect the prevention of storms and floods in the locality, and to deal with cases violating the Dyke Law. Eight cases violating the law were reported over the past one week, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported. The groups will examine local embankment systems and irrigation works on a regular basis. The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the number of storms affecting Vietnam this year are expected to be fewer than last year but will be stronger. It predicts about 10 to 12 storms and tropical depressions may appear in the East Sea this year, with four to five directly affecting mainland Vietnam. The Red River Delta in the north could face two to three storms or tropical depressions in July, August and September…

 

Spend more on prevention to cut losses from disasters

ACC01790PHIWith the costs from natural disasters quadrupling over the last three decades, Asian government are urged to invest more in disaster preparedness to lessen damage from calamities. In a conference of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Manila (4-6 June) focusing on disaster mitigation, Kristalina Georgieva, European Union commissioner for International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, and Margareta Wahlström, head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, were one in saying that more needs to be done if Asia is to overcome the challenges posed by natural calamities…

 

BBC to broaden health and wellbeing offering

The BBC is looking to develop an online health and wellbeing portal and launch resilience training for staff and managers as part of its extended wellbeing offering across the business. Speaking at the Health @ Work Summit 2014 BBC mental health lead Susannah Robertson-Hart explained that the organisation was seeking to introduce a more coordinated approach to wellbeing following the introduction of the mental health team six months ago…
